The July 22 Board Meeting -- the only board meeting scheduled in July -- has been cancelled. Nothing was posted by the Administration or Board of Education regarding this cancellation on Board Docs. The only "notice" given was on the D181 website homepage under the "calendar" of events. No reason was given there either, however, we have learned that the meeting was cancelled due to a "lack of quorum."
Lack of quorum means that a majority of a board cannot attend a meeting, and without a majority, no business can be conducted. In this case, that means that at least 4 of the 7 D181 Board members were not going to attend the July 22nd meeting.
Perhaps the Administration was also not ready for the meeting because Dr. Schuster just returned from a nearly 3 week vacation. It would be transparent and appropriate for both the Board and Administration to provide an explanation to the community of the reasons for this cancellation.
The cancellation of this meeting is particularly disappointing because

Update on last post -- Nelson lets the community down once again.
Well, we just checked the video feed of the July 10 Village of Hinsdale Plan Commission Meeting. Looks like "Commissioner Nelson" is 7 for 7 this year, missing the latest meeting held last Wednesday. We were actually hoping to watch the video and see Mr. Nelson in attendance, but our hopes were dashed. Mr. Nelson is making a mockery out of the concept of public service. While we have only called for him to step off the D181 Board, it looks like he should actually resign from both of his "public offices." Absence does not "make the heart grow fonder." It builds resentment when a seat that should be filled with a committed community member remains empty meeting after meeting.

Mr. Nelson should follow Mr. Cassini's Lead and Resign
While we know that there was some divisiveness during the Hinsdale D86 high school district board of education elections, resulting in turnover on the board and perhaps a change in the "majority," we want to take this opportunity to commend D86 Board Member Cassini for voluntarily resigning last night as the board's president. He did so after only serving as the President for two months, citing difficulty meeting the time commitment demanded of the president as his reasoning. While some community members may view this as a cop out, we applaud him for recognizing that he needed to put the taxpayers, parents, students, teachers and administration first and not continue in a role he could not properly commit to.
We hope D181 Board Member Michael Nelson follows in Mr. Cassini's lead and resigns from the elementary/middle school board.
